The water is a symbolic place of contact with the divine through widyadari, nymphs who bathe there. The Taman Ayun temple are categorized into the state temple where the ancestors of a royal dynasty and the founder of a kingdom are collectively worshipped by the people of a kingdom. State temples include mountain temples, sea temples, and those at the heart of a kingdom.
All of the merus and pelinggih here are dedicated to the ancestors of the royal family and the God in His many manifestations. Among thos all pelinggihs, there is a brick building facing east the paibon, a royal ancestral altar. Click Here!
When he took Mahameru, a part of the mountain fell to the earth in Bali, along with a group of his monkey armies. According to this legend, they are the ancestors of the monkeys you will see in Bali. Alas Kedaton is a small forest with a cluster of towering trees and hoe of hundreds of sprite monkeys. The forest and all tame monkeys are considered to be sacred. For many years no one has been permitted to chop the wood nor to catch any of the monkeys.
The temple inside the forest where the monkeys living is dedicated to the god of water. The Hindu Balinese believe that the forest or monkeys are the property of the god of the temple.
On the way to Bedugul we will feel a radical change of atmosphere from the green and yellow rice paddy into green and fertile land of vegetables, from flowing tiers of rice to motley patches of onion, cabbage and other fruits. On both sides of the main road we can see hills of green vegetables and farmers working to cultivate the land.
This is rich alpine country. The earth saturated by mountain streams is smothered with thick moss and creepers. The lake Bratan takes an important part of peasants daily life as a water reservoir to irrigate the vegetables plantation and rice field in the lower area. The beautiful temple on this lake is dedicated to Dewi Danu, godess of water.
The rock becomes beautiful as being carved by the incoming tide for many years. Though the temple is small, but for the Balinese this temple is very important as it is associated with Danghyang Nirartha - Ida Pedanda Sakti Wau Rauh- a holy Hindu priest who made a holy trip on foot through the island at the end of 15th century. He once arrived in this village and took a rest in this small rocky isle.
He healed many sick people from the fishermens village. But he did not want to move from this place and advised the fishermen to built a temple there as he felt it to be a holy and fitting place to worship God. The fishermen kept the promise and built a temple we could see today.
